Development Officer

Location: Keeseville, NY with a mix of remote/in office work, with frequent regional and occasional statewide travel
Employment Type: Part-Time (20-25 hours per week)

Scope of Responsibilities: AdkAction is hiring a part-time Development Officer to cultivate a more strategic, value-aligned approach across its fundraising program, and embark on a new level of growth and engagement for the organization. This new position will collaborate closely with, and report to, the Executive Director. The Officer will design, implement, and improve AdkAction’s fundraising efforts to achieve the organization’s annual and long-term financial goals, with an emphasis on building and growing trusted relationships to carry out our shared mission. 

The Officer will bring leadership and vision to carrying out AdkAction’s strategic financial sustainability goal, including personal engagement with the members of our Leadership Circle, major donors, foundation supporters, planned and legacy givers, special events opportunities, and a new major project campaign. 

The Development Officer will help lead strategic initiatives to identify, cultivate, solicit, and follow up with major donors and foundations. Shared with the Executive Director, the Officer has a lead responsibility for growing  relationships with individual supporters, foundations, and other sources of significant funding. The Officer will also work closely with the Board of Directors, the Board’s Development and Finance Committees, and the Communications, Operations, and Office Administration staff to grow AdkAction’s supporter base, assist with our budgeting and reporting processes, and advise on the creation of compelling printed and digital materials.

This is a new position. If desired, and as funding allows, this position has the potential to grow into a full time role over time. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    • Bring strong relationship building skills and thoughtful development strategies and to prepare and implement fundraising plans for annual operations, reserves/endowment, and special campaigns.
    • Design and implement annual fundraising strategies based on results analysis to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward donors to raise funds in collaboration with the staff, Board members, the Development Committee, and others.
    • Work with the Communications and Operations team to oversee annual appeals, special events, and online and social media fundraising campaigns.
    • Direct and support management of major donor engagement through personal contacts, events, stewardship, direct mailings, and emails, with corresponding record keeping, planning, and prioritizing. 
    • Direct and support donor research, prospecting, and acquisition efforts to expand the Leadership Circle and major donor databases.
    • Serve as an advisor and reviewer of grant proposals, broadly managed by the Project Manager staff, and special projects as necessary.
    • Serve as the lead staff member of the Development Committee
    • Serve as the lead Development contact for all Board Members, securing board gifts and participation in annual giving, select campaigns, and growing reserves, as well as identifying and cultivating new Leadership Circle-level donors.
    • Use and contribute to improving AdkAction’s Salesforce database, which is broadly maintained by Communications, Operations, and Administration staff.
    • Create and track, on a monthly basis, annual fundraising and project/campaign results.
    • Coordinate with the Communications and Operations team in developing publications or other materials that support fundraising activities.
    • Coordinate with the Finance Committee on budgeting, accounting, and tracking of individual donor income.
    • Work with program staff to enable them to identify, cultivate, and steward donors in their geographic region and subject area.

Qualifications

    • 5-8+ years of nonprofit, academic, or similar fundraising experience with demonstrated ability to raise money, including major gifts
    • Commitment to and understanding of the mission, goals, and culture of AdkAction
    • Understanding of and passion for vibrant rural communities and healthy ecosystems
    • Strong knowledge of principles, ethics, and practices of successful fundraising
    • Excellent writing, communication, and interpersonal skills
    • Strong public speaking and presentation skills
    • Ability to travel in region and out of the Adirondack region on a semi-regular basis
    • Experience with CRM database is required, and experience with the Salesforce platform is a plus
    • Proven major capital campaign design and implementation is a plus

Double Up Food Bucks Outreach AmeriCorps VISTA Member

Are you passionate about local food and improving food access for your friends and neighbors? Are you looking to get into a career in food systems, community organizing, or non-profits? If you said yes to any or all of those questions, then apply to become a Double Up Food Bucks Outreach VISTA member! 

Double Up Food Bucks (DUFB) addresses access to healthy foods by offering SNAP participants a $1 for $1 match to buy locally grown produce at participating farmers markets, mobile markets, small retail, and grocery locations. Our VISTA members will be serving in areas with high food insecurity to connect SNAP participants to community services. Embedded within local nonprofit organization AdkAction and part of a statewide team supervised by Field & Fork Network, the VISTA Double Up Food Bucks Outreach Coordinator will focus on expanding access to and utilization of the DUFB program within the North Country region of the Adirondacks and Essex County.

Primary responsibilities of the Double Up Food Bucks Outreach VISTA Member:

  • Identify and assess barriers to food access among residents of the greater Essex County region
  • Support implementation of a DUFB Community Ambassador pilot project
  • Enhance regional network of community partners working to address nutritional security
  • Coordinate outreach to increase awareness of DUFB and promote its use
  • Provide operational support to existing DUFB retailers to increase utilization
  • Identify prospective retailers who may be interested in offering DUFB to their customers and support adoption

Qualifications:

  • Understanding of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and proven dedication to alleviating poverty and addressing food insecurity
  • Experience gardening, farming, and/or selling produce preferred
  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Docs/Sheets preferred
  • Previous volunteer experience
  • Experience working with marginalized, low-income communities
  • Outreach and volunteer management experience preferred
